When the designers Birgit Hoffmann and Christoph Kahleyss reported on their idea to market the new project, we were immediately hooked. The designed leather chair “Grace” for the Freifrau Manufaktur should be packaged and shipped in a high quality miniature version.

The result is impressive.

The packaging was lovingly digitally printed and refined with UV relief varnish in one operation on our Canon Arizona machine. Then covered by hand.

When we were given the task by a large paper manufacturer many years ago to test the implementation of grass cardboard and grass paper in the packaging sector, it was difficult to predict how quickly the market would accept this innovation.

Today these materials are a matter of course on the market.

Almost a year later, another manufacturer approached us to test paper with an extremely high proportion of denim residues.

This material is also finding its way onto the paper market.

A real innovation means the production of “paper” without cutting down a tree, without using water and without the use of chemicals, as is common in paper or cardboard production.

The so-called stone paper fulfills these properties.

The term “paper” is misleading because this substrate is not paper.

Stone substrate consists of 70-80% stone meal (calcium carbonate) and

20-30% made of HD-PE (binding agent).

The production of one ton of stone paper means the protection of 20 trees or the avoidance of approx. 72,740 liters of water, which would otherwise be used in the production of normal paper.

It forms a 100% barrier against water and therefore does not require any subsequent film lamination. The material is also flame retardant and very tear-resistant.

The proportion of 20-30% PE (based on natural gas or sugar cane) cannot be discussed away and must be considered in the same way in the environmental balance.

In terms of the long service life of this material, however, it offers an unbeatable advantage over the use of plastics. Stone paper is certified according to the Cradle to Cradle principle.

Once again, DMH’s know-how was in demand and we were commissioned to be one of the first companies to test this material in its application.

It is a matt substrate that has a pleasantly soft feel, reminiscent of thin plastic, is extremely tear-resistant and can carry several liters of water as a bag without softening.

Material for acrylic protective walls is currently barely available and expensive.

In order to find a solution at short notice, we developed these protective walls made of corrugated cardboard. The window film can of course be wiped off from PET or PVC film.

On 24.10.2019 it was time again. The Druck und Medien Awards 2019 were presented at the Hyatt Hotel in Berlin and celebrated their 15th anniversary at the same time. Dirk Leisering, of the DMH, was there again as a jury member and gave the eulogy to the Gold Award winner, Rüdiger Maaß.

Mr. Maaß, Managing Director of the Media Production Association, was honored for his unique arrangement in the printing industry and enthusiastically celebrated by the audience.

For the HCBR race in Hamburg our customer needed the Queen Mary “to take away”. We gave her wheels and rebuilt the hull out of cardboard. And fast, she is now too!
